What's Included

Brick Repair Services We Offer

Every brick job starts by finding where the water gets in. Then we choose the right repair for the wall, from replacing a few units to repointing an entire elevation.

Brick Replacement

Cracked, chipped and spalling bricks are cut out and replaced with units that match size, color and texture.

Mortar Repointing

Failed mortar is ground out to the proper depth and replaced with new joints matched to the original.

Tuckpointing

Fine, two-tone joints are restored on decorative brick where the look of the wall matters most.

Efflorescence and Water Damage

White staining and damp walls are traced to their source and corrected, then the surface is cleaned.

Leaning and Bulging Walls

Bowed or shifting brick sections are rebuilt so the wall is straight and sound again.

Sealed Openings and Cracks

Gaps around windows, doors and penetrations are sealed so rain and snowmelt stay out.

Repointing

Brick Repointing That Matches Your Wall

Mortar is meant to wear out before the brick does. When joints turn powdery, recede or crack, water gets behind the face of the wall. We remove the failed mortar, clean the joints and replace them with new mortar matched to the strength, color and joint style of the original.

Mortar that is harder than your brick can crack the brick faces, which is why strength matters as much as color. Before work starts, we check the mortar against the age and type of your wall so the repair protects the brick instead of damaging it.

Know the Difference

Repointing or Tuckpointing: Which Does Your Wall Need?

Repointing means removing damaged mortar and filling the joints with new mortar that matches the original. It is the right repair for most structural brick walls and chimneys. Tuckpointing uses two shades of mortar to imitate fine joints and is mostly a cosmetic finish.

On a site visit we look at how deep the damage goes and what the wall is doing. Many homes need repointing first and, on a decorative wall, a tuckpointed finish after. We explain the options in plain English so you can choose with confidence.

Spalling Brick

Spalling and Cracked Brick Repair

Spalling happens when brick faces flake or pop off, usually because trapped moisture freezes and expands. Utah freeze-thaw cycles make this common on older walls, chimneys and garden walls. Replacing the damaged brick is only half the job, so we also look for the moisture path that caused it.

Replacement bricks are chosen for size, color and texture, then set in matched mortar. We sort and place units carefully so the repair does not stand out and the wall reads as one continuous surface.

Water Damage

Finding and Fixing Water Damage in Brick Walls

Most masonry failures begin with water, not bad brick. White staining called efflorescence, damp interior walls, eroded joints and a cracked chimney crown all point to a path that water is following. We trace that path before repairing anything so the same problem does not return.

Fixes can include repointing eroded joints, sealing gaps around windows and doors, repairing a chimney crown or correcting drainage near the foundation. Spot repairs come first where the wall is sound, and rebuilding is saved for sections that cannot be saved.

Older Homes

Repairing Older and Historic Brick

Older brick is softer than modern brick and needs softer mortar. Hard modern mortar can trap moisture and crack historic faces, so we match mortar strength and color to the age of your wall. This suits early twentieth century homes, including the aging brick found in Capitol Hill in Salt Lake City.

Careful repointing keeps the character of an older home while stopping leaks. We take the time to match joint profile, tooling and color so the finished wall reads as original instead of patched.

Questions

Brick Repair FAQs

Q1

How do I know if my brick needs repair or repointing?

Look for powdery mortar, hairline cracks, joints recessed more than 1/4 inch, loose bricks, flaking faces and water stains inside near exterior walls. Catching these early keeps repairs small and affordable.

Q2

Can you match old brick and mortar?

Yes. We match brick size, color and texture along with mortar color, strength and joint style, and we check the mortar against your wall before work begins.

Q3

How long does brick repair take?

Small jobs such as a few bricks can often be finished in a day or two. Larger repointing and chimney work takes longer, and your estimate includes a schedule.
