Causes
Why Block Walls Crack and Crumble
Concrete block is strong, but it is porous. Water that soaks in during rain and snowmelt freezes, expands and breaks the face of the block and the mortar between units. Poor drainage, settling soil and tree roots can add pressure that cracks the wall.
A stair-step crack that follows the mortar joints often points to settling, while horizontal cracks can mean pressure from soil behind the wall. We read these patterns during the site visit and explain what they mean.
Repair
Concrete Block Repair Done Right
Small cracks and open joints can often be repaired by cutting out failed mortar and repointing. Damaged blocks are removed and replaced, and the new units are bonded into the wall so the repair is solid and not just cosmetic.
We match the mortar to the wall and tool the joints so water sheds instead of pooling. Where the wall is still sound, we favor a spot repair over a full rebuild to keep the cost down.
Rebuilding
When a Block Wall Needs to Be Rebuilt
Some walls cannot be repaired. A wall that leans, bulges or has large open cracks may have lost its structural support, and patching it hides the problem instead of solving it. In those cases we explain why a rebuild is needed and show you the damage.
A rebuild starts with finding out why the wall failed, whether that was drainage, soil movement or poor construction. We correct the cause first, then rebuild the wall so it does not fail the same way again.
Moisture
Sealing Block Walls Against Moisture
Moisture is the main enemy of block walls. After repairs are done, joints and block faces can be sealed to slow water absorption. Sealing works best on sound masonry, which is why we repair first.
We also look at what sends water to the wall in the first place, such as downspouts, sloped soil and sprinklers. Small changes to drainage often add years to the life of a wall.
New Walls
New Concrete Block Wall Construction
Grant North Masonry also builds new block walls for homes and commercial properties, including garden walls, shop walls and building shells. Courses are laid plumb and level with full mortar beds, because even courses last longer.
Block can be left plain or finished with brick or stone for a more refined look. We talk through the options with you and give you a written price before work begins.
Cost
What Affects the Cost of Block Wall Work
Cost depends on the wall's size, its condition, how easy it is to reach and whether the repair involves a few blocks or an entire section. Rebuilds cost more than repointing or spot replacement, which is why we repair first when the wall is sound.
After the inspection you receive a written price that separates urgent repairs from work that can be done later. Estimates are free, and there is no pressure to decide on the spot.

Questions
Block Wall FAQs
Q1
Can a cracked block wall be repaired?
Often, yes. Small cracks and open joints can be repointed and damaged blocks replaced. Walls that lean or bulge may need to be rebuilt, and we explain which applies after inspecting the wall.
Q2
Why does my block wall have stair-step cracks?
Stair-step cracks that follow the mortar joints usually point to settling or movement under the wall. We look at the cause before repairing the cracks so they do not return.
Q3
Do you build new block walls?
Yes. We lay new block for homes, shops and commercial buildings, and we can finish walls with brick or stone if you want a different look.
